Romania’s judiciary prepares “assault” on security
8 September 2009 | 17:03 | Evenimentul Zilei

In brief: the judges threaten not to issue more warrants for arrests and the prosecutors – to take no steps to criminal prosecution. Some magistrates realize that they would break not the Labor Disputes Act as well as the main rights of the citizens, which they have to defend.

Representatives of the police believe that such steps on behalf of the magistrates are inadmissible with a view to the fact that many police raids are made and about twenty criminal, endangering the citizens and the public order are arrested in twenty-four hours. Representatives of civil associations of lawyers and even magistrates, who are against the extreme measures, discussed by their colleagues from professional unions of magistrates, are of the same mind as the police.

In reference to the extreme measures of protest of judges and magistrates, some Romanian MEPs also raised their voices.

For example, former Minister of Justice Monica Macovei said that “the judicial system in Romania is governing itself now” and that is the best moment “to step in it because that sphere should not be out of the political decisions”.

The magistrates, however, are adamant.

“On Tuesday (8 September) we will demand to be allowed to join the Parliamentary committees so as to hold a consultation on the act on salaries and if it does not occur, our protests would be extreme: we would not judge even in cases with arrested persons”. That statement has been made by Cristi Danilet, representative of the representative of the National Union of Judges of Romania, which is one of the largest unions of magistrates in Romania.
