Sofia. From economic point of view, for 20 years of transaction, it can be said that in 2009 we have covered some of the indexes of 1990, i.e. the economy “moved by standing still”. This is what economist and associate professor Boyan Durankev said in an interview with FOCUS News Agency.
FOCUS News Agency speaks to ethnologist Prof. Rachko Popov about the popular superstitions are associated with Friday 13
FOCUS: Prof. Popov, what superstitions are associated with Friday 13th? Rachko Popov: While the number 12 is associated with completeness, with the12 Apostles and with good, the number 13 does not bring completeness. Friday is one of the bad days of the week, dedicated to St. Petka (St. Paraskevi) when any woman work is forbidden, when one must not spin, sew, touch sharp objects and if course in the past a sexual taboo too was observed. This is sheer coincidence and overlapping of days and numbers mythologies.
FOCUS: So 13 is a bad number? Rachko Popov: Yes, good numbers are always followed by bad numbers, succeeding each other.
FOCUS: What sort of folk superstitions are there? Rachko Popov: Friday 13 has this contemporary connotation as in my field research some 20 – 30 years go it has never been widely assumed that Friday the 13th is particularly bad a day.
FOCUS: So what’s with the fatalism of the day? Rachko Popov: I think there is some sort of legend, a biblical fable about the battle between good and evil, which lasted 13 days.
