Bulgaria’s social ministry expects that Bulgarians, mainly from Spain, will be returning.
In an interview with FOCUS News Agency Lilyana Stankova, Director of Free Movement of People, Migration and Integration Directorate, says that the total number of Bulgarians registered in the social security system in Spain in March was 53,673 and in April – 51,772, or a drop of 1,901 people. The highest number of Bulgarians registered in the Spanish social security system is living in the community of Castile and Leon – 9,129 people. 4,370 people are working in the agriculture sector in Castile and Leon, Valencia and Andalusia, and 1,140 persons are working as au-pairs.
According to the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry the people returning from abroad will pressurize the Bulgarian labor market, and the jobless rate at present is some 10%, and not a little bit over 7%, as the official data says.
The Chamber’s Deputy Chairman Kamen Kolev mentions some other figures concerning the economic contraction – industrial orders have dropped by 30%-35% on the average, in some sectors and for some firms – up to 60%-70%, a decrease of around 55% in foreign investments since the beginning of the year.
According to the Trade Register some 140 enterprises have declared insolvency since the beginning of the crisis.
The Deputy President of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria Plamen Dimitrov says Bulgarians coming back from abroad should be given special treatment. He notes the unemployment rate is much higher than 7.29% and at least 4% should be added to that figure to represent the permanently discouraged people, young people who do not believe they will find a job.
