Sofia. Patriarch Neofit of Bulgaria serviced the traditional water blessing ceremony on the military flags of the Bulgarian Army on the occasion of Epiphany, FOCUS News Agency reported informed.
The ceremony took place in front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in the Bulgarian Capital city Sofia.
The event was also attended by President Rosen Plevneliev, Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski, National Assembly Chairperson Mihail Mikov, MPs, representatives of the institutions and many citizens.

Kalofer. For a second year in row, a five-year-old boy, the youngest participant in the traditional men’s chain dance, took out the holy cross from the water of the Tundzha River in the Bulgarian town of Kalofer during Epiphany celebrations. Mayor of Kalofer, Rumen Stoyanov, announced the news for FOCUS News Agency.
Under the tradition, a priest throws a cross into the river, and it is believed that the one who retrieves it will be healthy through the year, as well as all those who dance in the icy waters. The cross can be taken out only by men.
The men’s chain dance is another tradition for Epiphany. The participants enter the water, dressed in traditional folklore costumes, singing folklore songs and playing traditional folklore instruments.
On January 6, Bulgaria marks Epiphany. The holiday is also known as Yordanovden ("Day of Jordan", referring to the river). On January 6 Bulgaria also marks the 166th anniversary since the birth of Bulgarian poet and national revolutionary Hristo Botev. Botev was born in the town of Kalofer.

Kalofer. Traditional men’s chain dance was held in the icy waters of the Tundza River in the Bulgarian town of Kalofer, AFP reported, offering photos of the event.
By old tradition, men dance the horo, or chain dance, in the River Tundzha in Kalofer during Epiphany celebrations on January 6.
Under the tradition, a priest throws a cross into the river, and it is believed that the one who retrieves it will be healthy through the year, as well as all those who dance in the icy waters. The cross can be taken out only by men.

Sofia. More than 100,000 Bulgarians celebrate a name day in Bulgaria on January 6 when Bulgaria marks Epiphany. The holiday is also known as Yordanovden ("Day of Jordan", referring to the river).
The names that are honoured today are, as follows: Yordan, Yordanka, Dancho, Dana, Boyan, Bogdan, Bogdana, and others.
By the end of 2013 there are 54,000 men with the name Yordan in Bulgaria, while the women called Yordanka are 41,000.
There are 4,100 men called Bogdan and 3,500 women called Bogdana.
Some 1,043 babies are to celebrate their first name day this year on the Day of Jordan.

Sofia. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Plevneliev will attend the military flags blessing ceremony of the Bulgarian Army on January 6 – Epiphany, the press office of the Bulgarian presidency announced.
The traditional Epiphany water blessing of the military flags, and the flags and banners of the sacred places of the Bulgarian Army will be held in front of the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in the Bulgarian capital city Sofia.

Bulgarians in Ukraine to mark 166th anniversary of Bulgaria’s Hristo Botev birth

Odessa. Pan-Ukrainian public organisation Congress of the Bulgarians in Ukraine will organise a solemn ceremony to mark the 166th anniversary since the birth of Bulgarian poet and national revolutionary Hristo Botev. The event will take place at the Prokhorovsky in Odessa, Ukraine, the congress announced for FOCUS News Agency.
The Bulgarians in Ukraine will lay flowers at the monument to Hristo Botev. Schoolchildren, on the other hand, will recite poems by the Bulgarian revolutionary.
In 1863, after completing his elementary education in the Bulgarian town of Kalofer, Botev was sent by his father to a high school in Odessa. He also worked as a teacher in Ukraine.

Sofia. Bulgaria marks Epiphany on Monday, January 6. The holiday is also known as Yordanovden ("Day of Jordan", referring to the river).
The Christian feast day will be marked throughout the entire country with special services, military flags blessing ceremonies and the special ritual of taking a cross out of a river.
A special Epiphany ceremony will be held in all garrisons of the Bulgarian Army.
