1,000 police officers guard Bulgaria-Turkey border

Sofia. "Some 1,000 police officers are currently guarding the Bulgarian-Turkish border," said Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Tsvetlin Yovchev, speaking with journalists after the regular Wednesday sitting of the Council of Ministers, FOCUS News Agency reported.
He added the refugee inflow along the border had multiplied over the past weeks and the authorities were returning between 150 and 200 people a day.
Mr Yovchev also stated he hoped when the fence [along the border] was completed, some 700 people assigned tasks there would return.

Italy’s EU Presidency priorities to be presented at forthcoming ECOFIN

Sofia. Bulgarian government has approved Bulgaria’s stance which it will take at the sitting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN), which will be held on July 8 in Brussels, the press service of the government announced.
The priorities of the Council in the frames of Italy’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union will be presented at the event.
Having as a base the adopted amendments to the Savings Directive, it is expected the Commission will reach an agreement with Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Monaco, Andorra and San Marino on the signing of agreements which will amend the 2004 agreements on the implementation of measures equivalent to the measures in the Savings Directive.
The Commission will introduce the finance ministers of the member states to the concrete steps made in the negotiations with each of the five countries as well as to the things agreed on at this stage.
The Council of Minsiters also approved on Wednesday a report on the results of the ECOFIN sitting held on June 20.

Newly-elected chair of NATO Investment Committee becomes part of Bulgaria delegation to NATO

Sofia. Bulgarian government has included in the composition of the Bulgarian delegation to NATO the newly-elected Chairperson of the NATO Investment Committee, the press service of the government announced.
Colonel Konstantin Nesterov was unanimously elected to the post at the beginning of 2014 and is to assume office as of September 1.
An officer with the Bulgarian army occupying this key position will allow the country make more active participation in the decision-making process and defending national interests in the frames of NATO, it is also announced.

Bulgaria govt approves BGN 22 mln for Kozloduy NPP 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th unit decommissioning

Sofia. Government has approved additional expenses at the amount of BGN 22 million under the 2014 budget of the Ministry of Economy and Energy, the press service of the Bulgarian government announced.
The resources were envisaged in the state budget to financially cover the activities connected with the decommissioning of the first four units of Kozloduy NPP in compliance with Bulgaria’s obligations to co-finance a project under the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund.
With decisions of the Council of Ministers made in 2008 and 2012 the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th units of Kozloduy NPP were declared facilities due to be decommissioned and were gratuitously granted to be managed by State Enterprise Radioactive Waste.
The adopted conception envisages the decommissioning activities, which are to reach a brownfield status, to be completed by 2030.

The cabinet is to discuss a draft decree on the approval of an additional resources transfer to the 2014 budget of the Ministry of Economy and Energy; a draft decree on the approval of an additional resources transfer to the 2014 budget of the Interior Ministry; a draft decision on coordination of activities concerning the implementation of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region; a draft decision on the establishment of a national committee and an organisational committee to mark the 100th anniversary of [the beginning of] the First World War and Bulgaria’s participation in it, and others.
