Sofia. “When talking about earthquakes magnitude 5 means about 20,000 times more powerful earthquake than a quake with magnitude 2.” That is what seismologist Professor Emil Botev, Head of Department Seismology at the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography with the Bulgarian Academy of Science (BAS) said in an interview for FOCUS News Agency .
"Compared to these life-threatening earthquakes of magnitude 7, which were registered on the territory of our country for six time in a short period of about 28 years of the past century, this [of this morning] is the earthquake which in no way should have an impact on the psyche of the people and it is absurd to think that it is related to their health," Professor. Botev stated.

900 times lighter earthquake hit Khalkidhiki peninsula this morning, compared to the in Samotraki: expert

22 August 2014 | 11:37 | FOCUS News Agency
Sofia. “The earthquake that hit Samotraki was around 900 times more powerful than the quake that was felt this morning on Khalkidhiki peninsula,” seismologist Prof. Emil Botev at the National Institute for Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography said in an interview for FOCUS News Agency .
“People there should not worry because the seismologic activity in the area of Khalkidhiki peninsula is quite big and around a dozen of such earthquakes occur every year, while hundreds of lighter quakes are often felt by the citizens. It is known that this seismologic activity will not cease as it is determined by natural laws,” Professor Botev specified.
In his words, the people of this region were accustomed to earthquakes and usually they don’t panic.
“We do not have information that the earthquake was felt on the territory of our country, although it measured 5 on Richter scale,” he added.
