Sociologist Kancho Stoychev: A unified position would strengthen ties within government

Sofia. A unified position of the government, different from any thoughtless statements, would strengthen ties between those in power, sociologist Kancho Stoychev told FOCUS Radio with regard to tension within United Patriots after the visit by Russian Patriarch Kirill to Bulgaria and related statements by Deputy Prime Minister Valeri Simeonov. According to Kancho Stoychev, statements like Simeonov’s are unacceptable and far from personal opinion. He expects a reaction from Russia. “The true interpretation of the events is that, regardless of the intentions and motivation, the lives of Russian soldiers and officers did help for Bulgaria’s freedom. Any further interpretations are unnecessary. People may like the Patriarch or not, which is personal matter, but from a Deputy Prime Minister of Bulgaria, the statement was not only scandalous and unacceptable but had nothing to do with politics. Just as by insulting the pope one insults hundreds of millions of people, the same was done by that man because of some personal judgement. He may make whatever judgments he’d like if he was an ordinary citizen, but he represents the state,” the sociologist said. In his view, politicians should not interfere and take a stance on statements by clerics.

GERB wants President Radev to declassify record of meeting with Russian Patriarch

Sofia. MPs for Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (CEDB/GERB) want the record of the meeting between Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and Russian Patriarch Kirill to be declassified. This would clear any doubts that Bulgaria’s national position was defended at the meeting, Toma Bikov from the ruling party said at a briefing in the Parliament, quoted by FOCUS News Agency. “We respect the Russian army, we are grateful that it waged a war in the name of Bulgarian freedom, but Bulgarian volunteers also participated in it, as did people from other nationalities,” the MP said.
