Government mulls new company to maintain municipal dams while they are transferred to state

Sofia. A company may be set up to maintain municipal dams and adjacent areas while they are transferred to a proposed state-owned company, Minister of Economy Emil Karanikolov told reporters, quoted by FOCUS News Agency. The proposal implies that all municipal dams which the municipalities cannot maintain, mostly because they are short of money, will be transferred to the state-owned company, the minister said. Now he also announced ideas about dam and riverbed maintenance in the short term. The country has nearly 150 dams in a more severe condition, according to data of the State Agency for Metrological and Technical Surveillance. With the transfer of dams and the creation of a company, works will immediately start to solve the problems, Karanikolov said. He could not specify the cost of the repairs. “Let’s see which of all dams will be transferred to us,” he said.
On the other hand, a proposed state fund would collect money from all commercial dams in the country. This will be some additional fee on commercial activities, maybe some percentage of the lease payment, the minister said.

Hayredin mayor: Single state body monitoring dams would secure people’s safety

Hayredin mayor: Single state body monitoring dams would secure people’s safety

15 March 2018 | 14:28 | FOCUS News Agency
Sofia. A single state body to monitor the dams would better secure people’s safety, Hayredin Mayor Todor Aleksiev told FOCUS Radio this morning, commenting on the government’s idea to create a company for dams. He said that the municipalities do not have enough experts and money to manage their dams. If the facilities are transferred to the state, this would improve coordination and prevent abuses with funds disbursed for dam maintenance, according to Aleksiev. He thinks that even if the municipalities get additional funds for the dams, some might use the money for other purposes. Commenting on the current situation in Hayredin, he said that the water level in the Rogozen 1 dam is decreasing, but there is still risk until the water returns to normal levels. The dams in the municipality have been close to emergency for years, and the money for repair and maintenance is too little, the mayor added.
