Nearly 40 cases of high levels of fine particulate matter in the air have been registered in Gorna Oryahovitsa since the beginning of the year. In Veliko Tarnovo and Svishtov, the cases have been 10 and 18, respectively, Desislava Vaseva, senior expert at the regional environmental authority, told Focus Radio-Veliko Tarnovo
. With the end of the winter, the levels of pollution are expected to significantly decrease, as solid fuel stoves are the main source of pollution, she said. The municipalities draft and implement programmes with specific measures to reduce the levels of particulate matter pollution and comply with the environmental standards. The implementation is controlled by the municipal bodies together with the regional environmental authority, the expert explained. The levels of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and ozone have been normal, she added.
