PM Borissov: We are relentless in every aspect of the fight against smuggling and corruption

Sofia. In every aspect of the fight against smuggling and corruption, we will be relentless, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said during the presentation of the results of inspections for illicit cigarette trade, Focus News Agency reports.
“I have some questions, though. First, I will ask the Ministry of the Interior why these regional directorates had allowed an increase [in illicit trade]. I want to know what caused this 0.6% increase. The map clearly shows that these cities lie along the highways or to the south, close to the border and to easy transportation. These are Haskovo, Yambol. While Shumen has 2%, Varna, Burgas - 4%, in Haskovo illicit trade reaches 17%, we cannot allow that. I can assure you that in every aspect of the fight against smuggling and corruption we will be relentless,” Prime Minister Borissov said.
He said he also wanted to ask the other EU member states whether they conduct similar events attended by the prime minister and the prosecutor of the respective country. “In Ireland, out of 100 packs, 39 are smuggled, in the UK – 30, in France – 20. At the same time, donor countries suggest reducing the cohesion funds for the Southeast Europe. If those numbers are true, I see billions of euros lost for the budget due to insufficient measures against corruption and smuggling,” the prime minister commented.
