Medieval Tarnovgrad, an international festival of historical reenactments, to take place from 29 June to 1 July, in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria18 June 2018 | 15:55 | FOCUS News Agency
The festival will be opened on 29 June at 07:00 pm with demonstrations of combat moves and battles in the fortress. The great ruler will come alive in the theatre piece The Weddings of John Assen II, which will be performed in the Royal Palace by actors from the Veliko Turnovo’s Musical and Dramatic Theatre “Konstantin Kisimov”. The director of the production is Antoni Tsonev.
Some 144 reenactors from Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and Serbia will participate in the big festival. They will show specific elements of everyday life in the Second Bulgarian Empire and Medieval Europe. They will demonstrate in detail authentic crafts and technologies from the 11th-13th centuries – hot and cold forging, grinding, leather working, parchment making, coin minting, wood carving, knife making, lace and belt knitting. Medieval Bulgarian and European cuisine will also be presented.
Visitors will be able to participate in archery and crossbow games, and learn about weapon and combat techniques. Each of the three evenings will end with a concert of medieval Balkan and European music.
The festival is organised by the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo in partnership with the Regional Historical Museum, the Tradition Club, the Chigot and Avitohol associations (Varna), Modus Vivendi Medieval Society - Sofia, Baradj Druzhina (Pazardzhik), Eriney Group and Vereni Association. The foreign reenactors are from the Brown Bear and The Red Dragon groups (Romania), Beli Orlovi (Serbia), Spiritual Seasons (Ukraine).
