The Museum of History Petrich is part of the general trends for museum activity in Bulgaria, which has been steadily growing in recent years amid renewed interest in historical past and heritage, the museum’s director, Dr. Sotir Ivanov, told Focus Radio
. He pointed out statistical data from the Ministry of Tourism indicating that cultural and historical tourism, as a share, is getting closer to recreational tourism at the sea or in mountain resorts with well-developed skiing. Tourist visits to the Petrich museum have been increasing by about 40% on annual basis in recent years, Ivanov said. “Fortunately this year we keep this trend. From the beginning of the year to June 30, the first six months, we have nearly 20,000 tourists and revenues of BGN 32,000, which shows that history is an important element of tourism development,” he added. At the same time, this tourism product is quite sustainable, generating the funds it needs, he stressed. “If we have revenues of nearly BGN 32,000, imagine what it means to the restaurant and hotel businesses, because tourists stay in the Petrich municipality and want to visit as many places as possible,” Dr. Ivanov commented. The museum offers a combined ticket for all four sites it manages, encouraging people to spend more time in the area. The director stressed on the variety of sights that can be visited, from the ancient Heraclea Sintica to the medieval Samuil fortress and exhibitions in the town.
