Sofia. There are not many sunken ships in the Black Sea that contain fuel, there are only about 2-3, Kalin Dimitrov, Director of the Centre for Underwater Archaeology, said in an interview with Focus News Agency. “Few are enough preserved to contain such dangerous fuels. Most have been ransacked as scrap over the years and there is not much left. We are talking about modern ships that potentially contain polluting cargo. The case in Sozopol is an exception rather than systematic or requiring serious thought. A review should be made to see which ships could contain fuel, but they are not so many, it’s about 2-3 ships,” he said.

Maritime authorities: Diving to sunken ship near Sozopol not expected today

Sozopol. The planned diving operation to the sunken ship near Sozopol is not expected to start today due to bad weather conditions, the head of Maritime Administration Burgas, Zhivko Petrov, told Focus News Agency. “All the equipment available and the divers have been mobilised. There are containers, a diving vessel, a diving chamber, two bottle storage units, that is, all the diving equipment. The ship that will collect the pumped volume [of fuel] is also there. The technique is hole drilling and pumping. There will be adjustments once the works start, as we do not have detailed diagrams of the ship,” he said. The aim is to remove the fuel oil from the ship’s tanks to prevent further leaking while preserving the ship as an attraction.
A one- or two-day delay is not a problem, divers must be safe, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov told reporters in Sozopol. “There is no crisis, but we are in a critical situation because in this stormy sea the ship may be damaged and then it will be dangerous,” he said.
