Sofia. University degree holders who want to earn a teaching credential can do so by completing a certification programme, said Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Valchev during a discussion on teaching staff policy, Focus News Agency reports.
“A lot of people in the education system are over 50 years old. We need to attract more teachers into the system,” he said. According to the minister, the main route for acquiring a teaching qualification is through a university degree in education. “What we are doing is increasing the numbers of admissions, increasing funding for teaching degree programmes, and offering additional scholarships to students pursuing teaching degrees,” he said. In his words, as of next academic year, the Ministry of Education and Science will propose that the teaching degree programmes be without tuition, that is, the fees will be funded through a third scholarship. “Besides this traditional route we will also develop a national programme for alternative ones. First, people who are specialists with university degrees and want to earn a teaching credential to work at school, can do so by completing a certification programme. This option already exists. What is new is that we will allocate funds for a refresher course for people who have a degree in education but have not started working or have not worked for a long time at school,” Minister Valchev explained.
