The election process is not 100 metres at the Olympics, political analyst and election expert Dimitar Dimitrov told Focus Radio
about the amendments to the Electoral Code. What’s important is not the time it takes to count the votes but to count them in such a way as to ensure the credibility of the election result, he said. In his opinion, the allegations that hand counting makes the process slow are manipulation. While machine voting remains merely optional it makes little sense to introduce it in each polling station, he said. “The idea of introducing machines is to eliminate the possibility of manipulation done or presumably done by the members of polling station committees. As long as the voter has only an option for machine voting, irregular things happening within the committees will only happen among those who vote with paper ballots,” he said. According to him, the credibility of the electoral process can be partly recovered with a voter register that would include the addresses of all people with Bulgarian citizenship.
