Europe needs a common strategy to counter terrorism, Slavko Velkov, security expert and MP for BSP, told Focus Radio
in connection with the latest attack in Europe at the Christmas market in Strasbourg. He said the view that each country should act by its national law and only if it feels threatened was ineffective, instead the EU countries should cooperate. “The act in Strasbourg is very specific, given that it was not prepared in advance, but the perpetrator was provoked by the failed attempt to arrest and imprison him. I believe that once again the national security system of France did not respond adequately, for a number of reasons,” said Slavcho Velkov. The threat to the Balkans is the same as to all European countries, and the only way to deal with it is security measures and vigilance, as there is not always information about prepared terrorist acts, he added. While the Islamic State group has become weaker in military terms, its ideological influence in Europe has not diminished, he said.
