For another year the traditional midwinter census of aquatic birds is about to begin, Dimitar Popov, Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) in Gotse Delchev, told Focus Radio
. “This is one of the largest-scale events in the field of nature conservation. It is carried out in over 100 countries and includes nearly 25,000 wetlands, many of which are part of the Natura 2000 ecological network. Nearly 15,000 experts and volunteers take part in the countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East where the census is taking place,” Popov noted. The local route is along the Mesta River, between the towns of Hadzhidimovo and Bansko, and at the dam of Dospat, the section between Dospat and Sarnitsa. The data will be entered into the information system through the Smartbirds app, with separate data bases for the different species. This will help the experts assess changes in the species populations and habitats. This year’s census will be carried out on January 12 and 13, probably amid severe weather conditions, Popov said.
