Sofia: Barrels of toxic and highly flammable material, 14 tonnes, found in industrial zone of Yana village

Sofia. Barrels filled with toxic and highly flammable material, 14 tonnes, have been found in the industrial zone of Yana village near Sofia, field work continues, the director of the Emergency Aid and Prevention Directorate with Sofia Municipality, Krasimir Dimitrov, told Focus News Agency.
He said a report of pungent suffocating odour and possibly discarded barrels in the industrial zone of Yana village was received Friday evening at 10:00 pm.
"By order of the mayor of the capital, Ms. Fandakova, an ad hoc committee was created with employees of the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water, the Executive Agency for Environment and Water, Fire Safety and Protection of Population, the mayor of the district was informed. We started together with the Fifth District Sofia Police Station investigative activities,” Dimitrov said. In his words, the assessments found that the area where the drums had been discarded was dangerous and toxic and the elements were highly flammable. He confirmed that there is threat to neighbourhood safety and an area of about 1.5 km was cordoned off.
He said on Sunday morning, a licensed company for hazardous waste treatment was called to take urgent measures to remove and transport the barrels. Today, the company continues its work dealing with remaining barrels and cleaning the soil.
