The town of Peshtera will have a completely new neighbourhood where Roma could legally build their new homes, Mayor Nikolay Zaychev said in an interview with Focus Radio
. The town already has two Roma neighbourhoods and there are no problems with this community, he explained. The new area will stretch on 31 decares, acquired by a non-profit organisation. About 60-70 houses could be built there according to design plans approved in advance. Only three municipalities in Bulgaria have this policy, and one of them is Peshtera. Nikolay Zaychev said that about 16 illegally built homes within the municipality had been demolished in connection with different investment projects, and a fund had been created to support the Roma who previously lived there. According to the mayor, the new neighbourhood is an innovative solution that can be implemented in other municipalities as well. He stressed there was no Gypsy crime in the municipality of Peshtera. It has a video surveillance system that covers the two Gypsy neighbourhoods.
