Rumen Petkov, ABV: The countries interested in investing in Belene NPP are impressive

Sofia. The countries interested in investing in Belene NPP are impressive, ABV party leader Rumen Petkov said in an interview with Focus News Agency, in reference to the bids submitted for investing in the construction of Belene Nuclear Power Plant. Petkov said investor interest in the Belene project from countries such as Russia, China, South Korea, the United States and France is evidence that the project is profitable and attractive to investors.
He outlined the reasons why Belene NPP would be beneficial for Bulgaria. "The plant is needed for this country. For two reasons: over the past two years, it has become apparent that there is a shortage of energy, something which ABV warned about five years ago. The second reason is, of course, a guaranteed low price of electricity and Bulgaria’s prospects as a member of the nuclear club. And we are still wondering why the Bulgarian state has not committed to investing 100% in this project, as some of the mentioned participants are already negotiating, with preliminary contracts, of course, […] the sale of electricity from Belene to our neighbouring countries," Petkov said.
The ABV leader defined the steps towards Belene construction as delayed but necessary, adding that the nuclear power plant would give energy security to Bulgaria and the business community.
