Bulgaria is celebrating the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavonic Literature. On this day, we honour the work of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius. In 855 Cyril and Methodius designed an alphabet, the Glagolitic, and translated sacred books needed in early Christian Bulgaria. In 1851, the Bulgarian school in Plovdiv organised the first celebration dedicated to Sts. Cyril and Methodius. The initiative of the Plovdiv teachers was endorsed in other cities in the 1860s. Over time, 24 May became a celebration of Bulgarian enlightenment. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church canonised Cyril and Methodius as saints for the translation of the Bible and the spread of Christianity among Slavs.
