Sofia. The Parliamentary Legal Committee has adopted on first reading a bill, according to which expedited proceedings should not apply to serious crimes, Focus News Agency reported.
The meeting considered a bill combining the three draft bills for changes to the Criminal Procedure Code, proposed by the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), minor coalition partner United Patriots and Volya, which were adopted on 25 September on first reading. According to the provisions of the draft bills, expedited proceedings should not be applied for serious crimes. They were adopted by the committee without debate, and the final decision is to be taken by the plenary.
The meeting of the committee came about after extraordinary Presidential Council of the National Assembly was convened on Friday after a motion by the BSP. According to the socialists, parliament has adopted mutually exclusive drafts, while the government says the three projects together with that developed by GERB complement each other logically, objectively and factually.
