Assoc. Prof. Antoniy Galabov, political scientist: Postponing membership talks with Northern Macedonia and Albania will lead to dire consequences for EU18 October 2019 | 12:01 | FOCUS News Agency
According to Assoc. Prof. Galabov, postponing once again the beginning of negotiations will be a bad sign for the people of these two countries. At the same time, it will show that the EU cannot reach an agreement on the implementation of its own rules, he said. The objections against the two countries did not differ significantly from what Bulgarians and Romania went through back then, Galabov said. “It is in fact the same mistake that cost a great deal in the process of our own European integration. Postponing and delaying these negotiations will not improve the situation. The normal political process would be to start a negotiation process and then to lay down requirements for Northern Macedonia and Albania. It seems to me that the EU is about to repeat the same mistake it made with Bulgaria and Romania," the political scientist commented. The European Council could commit to starting negotiations with Northern Macedonia and Albania early next year. This would meet the expectations of those countries that do not want the process to start now, but would also keep the European prospect for Northern Macedonia and Albania, he said.
