Shumen. Two new samples have tested positive for African swine fever (ASF) in wild boar in Shumen region, it transpired at a meeting of the Regional Epizootic Commission, FOCUS Radio-Shumen reported. Samples taken from wild boars killed during a group hunt on 5 and 6 October were sent for laboratory testing for ASF and Trichinella. Two samples from the villages of Sini vir and Venets tested positive for ASF. An official order declaring a new outbreak for the disease is yet to be issued, but Petko Sherenkov, the deputy governor of Shumen, said that appropriate measures have already been underway in view of the current situation.
The Sokol Hunting Society in Shumen raised the issue of the delay in the laboratory results, pointing out that samples sent on 7 October have not received their results yet. "People store a certain amount of meat in freezers and do not know what to do. We want a quick answer in writing, not through a phone call," said Stoyan Ivanov, specialist at Sokol Hunting Society. Dr. Katya Raykinska, director of the regional directorate for food safety, said that the procedure for submitting samples will be changed.
