The Sofia Municipal Council (SMC) will hold its first meeting. It will start at 10:00 with official greetings from the Regional Governor, Ilian Todorov, and the Mayor of Sofia Municipality, Yordanka Fandakova. The new municipal councilors, the elected city mayor, mayors of districts and mayors of mayoralties will be sworn in. The meeting will be opened and chaired by the oldest municipal councilor - Grety Stefanova of Democratic Bulgaria. The first meeting of the council will elect a chair and deputy chair by secret ballot. The newly-elected chair will preside over next meetings, or may authorise one of his or her deputies to do so. Their number will also be voted by the council.
The total number of councilors is 61. The ruling GERB party group is largest with 27 representatives. The opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party has 15 councilors, Democratic Bulgaria – 12, VMRO-BND – 4, Ataka – 2, plus the independent candidate of the Save Sofia movement, Boris Bonev. They may form political groups with a minimum number of at least 5 persons, as required by the Rules of Procedure of the SMC.
